This series has completely captured my attention. I am loving these alpha-male mobsters! Like the first book in the series, ‘Reaper’ was dangerous and incredibly hot!
If you’ve read the first book in the ‘Boston Underworld’ series, then you’ll remember Sasha as the nice stripper that became Mack’s friend. Similarly, Ronan stands out as Lachlan’s best friend and the man he trusted to guard Mack. You’ll probably also recall that there was some serious sexual tension between these two.
On the other hand, if you haven’t read the first book, this book could easily be read as a standalone. Having the background provided in the first book was nice and helped me understand the history between all of the characters, but it wasn’t absolutely essential. If you choose to read this book and haven’t read the first one, you’ll have no trouble following along or understanding what is going on.
After finishing the first book, I couldn’t wait to dive right into this one. Sasha and Ronan’s story was so much more than I had hoped for. It was emotional and heartfelt. Honestly, I didn’t see it coming.
Ronan is deeply scarred from his past. He has survived abuses that no one should ever have to. While it is simply amazing that he grew into a functional human being, he was not left without some deficits. In so many ways, he is childlike and closed-off.
This was something that I didn’t pick up on in the first book. I knew he had issues being touched, but didn’t understand why or to what extent. He was a strong and silent type, but I had no idea that there was far more going on. Everything is slowly brought to light in ‘Reaper’.
Although I didn’t find Sasha’s history to be surprising, it was still incredibly moving to read. Like Ronan, she has survived some terrible things in her life. Neither of them have had it easy and I think that is why they are such a great match. They get each other in a way that others would not be able to.
The more time the two spent together, the stronger their bond grew. Ronan showed a completely different side of himself when Sasha was around. The trained killer would morph into a sensitive, tender and insecure lover. He was so vulnerable with her that my heart melted.
It is a Mafia story, so you can expect plenty of danger and action to keep you on the edge of your seat. The author has done a nice job of balancing the hard and soft sides of this story. It is gritty and dangerous, but also romantic and heartfelt.
Overall, this was a fantastic read. I am hooked on this series now. Thankfully, each book to this point has provided closure and hasn’t left me hanging. That makes the wait for the next book far more bearable.
